About the Uzbek authors

PAHLAVON MAHMOUD, one of the spiritual mountains of Kharezm, a well-known wrestler, poet and famous clergyman, was born in 1247. His father was originally from ancient Urgench, a town in Uzbekistan. As a poet, he was well known in XIV-XV centuries and was described as a poet and wrestler in many influential pamphlets and encyclopedias of the XV-XX centuries. Pahlavon Mahmoud's poems have been watered with great feelings.

CHULPON, one of the victims of repressions of the thirtieth in the former USSR, very gifted poet and writer, supporter of enlightenment, author of the novel "Night and Day". He had several books of poetry and fiction to his credit, including "Spring" (1922), "Renaissance" (1923) and "Secrets of dawn". Chulpon was shot along with his friends on October 4, 1938.

USMON NOSIR, born in 1912 in Namangan city, author of five poetry collections - "Talsk to the sun", "Heart", "Mobilized lines", "Tractorobod", and "My mercy". He died in the village of Suslovo, Kemerovo region, Russia.

ABDULLA ORIPOV, national poet of Uzbekistan, playwright, statesman, was born in 1941 in Kashkadarya region, Uzbekistan. He has more than 15 poetry books. His works have been translated into many foreign languages. He has many awards for his great poetry and social activity. Currently he is at the head of Uzbekistan Writers Association.

ERKIN VOHIDOV, national poet of Uzbekistan, statesman, he published many books, translated works of many authors from classical literature. Currently he is working for Uzbek Senate.

RAUF PARFI, national poet of Uzbekistan, well-known for his free speech in Uzbekistan, dreamt of seeing all Turkic people united. Rauf Parfi struggled against oppression and was democrat. His poems inspired lots of hearts to advocate liberty and peace.

HALIMA KHUDOYBERDIEVA, well known poetess, national poetess of Uzbekistan, enlightener. She wrote many poetry books. She is very esteemed for her true feelings. For a long time she worked for Uzbekistan Women's Association and many editorial boards. Her poems have been translated into many languages, including Russian and English.

OMON MATJON, National poet of Uzbekistan, editor-in-chief of reputed literary magazine, was born in Kharezm. He has many poetry books to his credit.

SHUHRAT, poet, writer, took part in Great Patriotic War, wrote many books about this war. His poems are esteemed because he called for peace and prosperity. His work "A notebook of years with overcoat" was famous in Uzbekistan.

MUHAMMAD ALI, poet, writer, playwright, he published many books about Uzbek history, particularly, about Amir Temur, conqueror of the world. He is at the head of foreign relations department of the Writers Association. M. Ali traveled a lot, and his works have been translated into many languages, including English and Russian.

NORMUROD NARZULLAEV, national poet, wrote many lyric songs, contributed with many Uzbek singers. He published several books of poetry.

SHAVKAT RAHMON, great Uzbek poet, who passed away several years ago. Published many poetry and translation books. Supporter of young voices in Uzbek literature, struggled against oppression and for peace and democracy. Sh. Rahmon translated many poems from world literature. The most successful work of translation by him was Lorka's book of poems.

USMON AZIM, national poet and playwright. Worked for many publishing houses, editorial offices, and cooperated with national theatres. He has so many books of poetry to his credit. His works have been translated into many foreign languages. "Suffering of awakening" was a boom in Uzbek poetry in its time.

ABDULLA SHER, poet, writer and scholar was born in Tashkent region. Teaches esthetics at the National University of Uzbekistan. He is famous for his free speech and free poems. Published many poetry books and translated several books from world literature, including Shakespeare, Byron and Heine.

IKROM OTAMUROD, poet, contributor for reputed literary magazine "Star of the East". Published many books, including poetry collection "You".

MIRPULAT MIRZO, poet, translator, editor of the magazine "World literature". He published many books of translation, translated works from world literature into Uzbek. Lives in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan.

MIRZO KENJABEK, Sufi poet, journalist. He has many poetry books published in Uzbekistan. Writes more about love to Allah, friendship and peace.

SIROJIDDIN SAYYID, national poet of Uzbekistan, for many years he worked at the editorial board of the newspaper "Literature and art of Uzbekistan". Published mnay poetry collections. Currently works at the Writers Association.

ABDUVALI QUTBIDDIN, poet, editor. Works for publishing House "Yangi asr avlodi" and magazine "Yoshlik". Edited many books of poetry. He has several books of poetry to his credit. His poems have appeared in many anthologies.

AZIZ SAID, poet and translator, was born in Bukhara region, he has several boks of poetry to his credit, including "Where is Bedi'l soul". He transated many works from world literature. Koelho Paulo's "Alchemist" was published in Uzbek in his translation. He worked for many publishing houses and editorial boards. Currently he is th editor-in-chief of the Sinfdosh magazine.

KARIM BAHRIEV, former senator, poet, journalist, he worked for Internews International. He is a great supporter of democratic values, wrote many books on this subject. His works have been translated into many languages. He was editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Independence".

HALIMA AHMEDOVA, poetess, editor and presenter. She wrote many poems and is famous for her love poems. She is currently working for Uzbekistan radio. She edited many books of poetry, and now runs a special radio-program on spirituality and enlightenment.

UROZ HAYDAR, poet, was born in Kashkadarya region, published many poetry books. His poems appeared in many anthologies, including in "Tunes of Asia".

RAUF SUBHON, poet, editor, was born in 1958 in Samarkand. "Tadrij", "The continuation of the legend" are among his poetry books. He worked for many publishing houses, and currently he is the editor-in-chief at "Adolat" publishing house.

FAKHRIYOR, poet, journalist, for many years he has been working for Uzbekistan radio and TV Company. Published many books of poetry. His modern poems are famous with their structure, form and interesting style. Lives and work in Tashkent.

UMIDA ABDUAZIMOVA, poetess, enlightener, she wrote many books for children. For many years she has been working for children's newspaper "Morning star", which is published in Uzbek. Children like her poems very much.

ESHQOBIL SHUKUR, poet, editor, program presenter, journalist, he has been working for Uzbekistan TV for many years. Published many poetry collections.

PAHLAVON SODIQ, journalist, poet, studied at the National University of Uzbekistan and in Turkey. He has been working for BBC Uzbek service for many years. He is esteemed for his analytical radio programs. He has 2 books of poetry to his credit. Lives in London.

ULUGHBEK HAMDAM, was born in April 24, 1968, graduated from Tashkent State University, studied in Kunyo city, Turkey. He taught Turkish language at Tashkent institute of oriental studies. He published both scientific and literary books. His works include "Muvozanat", "Isyon va itoat", "Sabo va Samandar", poetry collections "Tangriga eltuvchi isyon", "Atirgul", "Seni kutdim", all in Uzbek language. He translated Rumi's "Fihi m fihi" and Usmon Turon's "Ideology of Turkic people" into Uzbek.

KHAYRULLA FAYZ, journalist, poet, lives in London, works for BBC Uzbek Service.

SAFAR OLLOYOR, journalist, award-winning poet, published many poetry books. Currently works for an editorial board in Tashkent.

JABBOR ESHONKUL, poet, scholar, editor, translator, he works for Uzbekistan TV channel. He translated contemporary Japanese poetry into Uzbek and published in Tashkent. He has several books of poetry to his credit. Knows several foreign languages, including Russian and Turkish.

ODIL IKROM, poet, journalist, published one book of poetry.

DILSUZ, journalist, poet, he currently works as the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Mushtum" and newspaper "Afandi". In 2006, he published a poetry collection.

JAMAL KAMAL, national poet of Uzbekistan, was born in 1938 in ancient Bukhara . Award-winning poet and translator, Jamal Kamal is one of Shakespeare's admirers. In Uzbekistan he first did Uzbek translations of works such as "HAMLET PRINCE OF DENMARK", "OTHELLO", "MACHBET", "ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA", "TIMON OF ATHENS", "CORELIANUS", "THE MERCHANT OF VENICE", "THE HISTORY OF HENRY IV", "THE WINTERS TALE", "ROMEO AND JULIET", "KING LEAR" and "JULIUS CAESAR". These are Jamal Kamal's life works. Some of them were published and staged on theatres in Uzbekistan. Jamal Kamal has also translated many books from Iranian literature. In particular, his translations from Jalaliddin Rumi are of great interest. He lives and works in Tashkent.

ZEBO MIRZAEVA (penname Zebo Mirzo) is one of the bright voices of contemporary Uzbek poetry. She was born on December 15, 1964 in Kashkadarya region. Zebo is famous for her love poems. She published three collections of poems - "The queen of the night", "Requital" and "Ashes of light". Passion, originality and spiritual feelings in her poems make a reader to think of divinity. Zebo works for Uzbekistan radio, as an editor. She has recently been to India for International Festival, where Zebo Mirzaeva was acclaimed by many international poets and writers. AZIM SOUYUN is a well-known poet. For many years he has been working for literary magazines and public organizations. Azim Souyun was the first to write qayirma (windings - A.A) in contemporary Uzbek literature. The word "qayirma" means a mature and ripe deed, action, craft and work. A. Souyun published many collections, including poetry, articles, and interviews. He is a member of many international creative writing institutions. At present, he is the editor-in-chief of "Guliston" magazine.

BAHROM RUZIMUHAMMAD was born in 1961 in Kharezm region. Modernist poet, he made great contribution to development of free verse poetry in contemporary Uzbek literature. He published many poetry collections including "Soundless step", "The star near the poplar", "Two lights", Davsaman", "Calmly blooming tree" and "Breadths of the day". His poems are not experiment-for-experiment's sake or they are not self-referential to the point of opacity. Instead, they remind the reader of the unexpected beauties of the mundane. B. Ruzimuhammad is a member of Uzbekistan Writers' Association. His poems were translated into Russian, English, German, Turkish, French and Polish languages. At present, he works at the editorial office of the magazine "Guliston".

DAVRON RAJAB is known as a poet and painter. He was born in 1967 in Urgench city, Kharezm region. He studied at an artistic institute. Davron Rajab illustrated more than thirty book-covers. He also studied at Higher Literature Course at the National University of Uzbekistan. Now he works at this University. He is the author of poetry collection "A star like a drop". His poems were translated into Russian, English and Karakalpak languages. His poems were also included in "Uzbek modern poetry" anthology.

KHOSIYAT RUSTAMOVA is one of the bright voices in contemporary Uzbek poetry. She was born in 1971 in Namangan region. A graduate from National University of Uzbekistan, she published many poetry collections, including "A house in the sky", "Rescue", "Rido" and "A wall". She writes about love, inner feelings, a matter of life and death. Khosiyat Rustamova is a member of Uzbekistan Writers Association. She was awarded with the medal "Shuhrat" ("Fame"). Poems of Khosiyat Rustamova are remarkable for their thoughtfulness, desperation and modesty. Their artistic value is rich of colors. Her verses flow out of the deepest layers of her heart. The lines are fluent and the feelings are sincere. Her poems have been translated into many foreign languages and distributed in foreign countries. She lives with her husband, poet and writer Quchqor Norqobil, in Tashkent.

TURSUN ALI, Poet and translator Tursun Ali was born in 1952 in Ferghana region. In 1971 he finished the second youth school in Tashkent and in 1981 he graduated from the National University of Uzbekistan. He translated Ancient Chinese landscape poetry into Uzbek. Tursun Ali's books include "The green clamor", "Words from the bottom of heart", "Bright days", "Threshold of grief", "Voice of the night", "My only darling", "Awakened silence", "Color of feelings" and "A silent scream". He was a prizewinner in a contest of "Smena" magazine in Moscow.

GUZAL BEGIM is one of the leading representatives of contemporary Uzbek poetry. She has an original unique style in creative writing. Many specialists appreciated her works very much. For example, Dr. Ozod Sharafiddinov and American scholar Rachel Harrell stated that Guzal Begim's poems are of great value in Uzbek poetry. G. Begim graduated from National University of Uzbekistan and Higher literature course named after M. Gorky in Moscow. Her books include "Jingle of silence" and "Shadow of a flying leaf".

UKTAMOY, poetess, journalist, was born in Namangan. She works for "Rural economy of Uzbekistan" magazine. She has several books of poetry to his credit.

AZAM ABIDOV, poet, translator, was born in 1974 in Namangan, city of flowers, Uzbekistan. He trained in philology. Azam is a talented literary translator. The most successful works by Azam Abidov are "Tunes of Asia" (English translation of contemporary Uzbek poetry), "Dream of lightsome dawns", "A miracle is on the way".
