This is Navoi's tomb (Mausoleum) just outside of Herat, Afghanistan. It is taken before the Russian invasion (circa 1960). Navoi's tomb is on the right side in the corner of a walled in garden. On the far left is Gawhar's Mausoleum, she was the wife of Shah Rukh.

This is Navoi's tomb after the Russian Invasion (circa 1980). The roof has a big hole, the bricks are sliding off and the garden has been decimated.

Taken another twenty years later (circa 2000). Gawhar's Mausoleum is in the foreground, with Navoi's tomb and ancient minarets in the background.

Here is close-up of Navoi's modestly restored tomb (circa 2000).

After the American-led war against the Taliban, the Uzbek government immediately provided for the demolishment of the original tomb and began building a bigger Mausoleum for Navoi (see foreground).

However, after further skirmishes around Herat the workers quickly leave (circa 2003).

The site now remains open to the elements (October, 2005).
